In a significant development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This coalition emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Address Young People's Concerns

Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly pledged to prioritize the issues raised by the new generation. This commitment comes after the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the country needs," remarked Lamichhane following the agreement was signed.

The September uprising was triggered by widespread anger over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper discontent stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and longstanding allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Terms of the Fresh Electoral Partnership

According to the formal pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A popular fifty-one-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the nation's established political class. He has in the past served in the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is seen as a key player in Nepal's current political transition. He was instrumental in forming the caretaker government that took over after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of major political figures. These discussions involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the initial such gathering since the time of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and open environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to remove any room for doubt.
